5 Simple Ways to Manage Stress

The constant juggling between work, home and everything else life throws at us can be quite overwhelming. It’s normal to get stressed or anxious and feel down for a while. It’s in human nature after all. But it’s important to set time aside for yourself and manage stress before it takes a toll on you. Afterall, nothing is more important than your mental, emotional and physical Wellness.

It might sound quite surprising, but the term ‘stress’ is a fairly recent discovery. Hans Selye was the first to use the term ‘stress’ in 1936 and defined it as “the non-specific response of the body to any demand for change”.

People have different ways to cope with stress. After all, it’s all about learning what works for you and not. Here are some simple suggestions that can help you manage stress.

Exercise

Working out regularly is considered as one of the best ways to relax your body and mind. Moreover, exercise increases sleep quality in adults by reducing sleep onset – the time required to fall asleep. Physical activity stimulates your body to release endorphins which is the body’s natural way to deal with stress/pain and improve your mood. Make sure to not exercise too close to the bedtime as it may disrupt your sleep.

Sleep – But Not Too Much

Once she stopped rushing through life she was amazed how much more life she had time for.

Stress or overthinking may cause you to stay awake even as you lie down on your bed. This leads to lack of sleep which is another key cause for stress. This vicious cycle takes a toll on you and wreaks havoc on your body and mind. Make sure to get at least seven to nine hours of sleep every night. Oversleeping won’t help you neither as it will make you feel more tired.

Laugh More Often

“Laughter is the best medicine” is a popular saying and definitely one we should be consuming more often. Laughter increases your intake of oxygen-rich air and releases endorphins which improves mood. It can even activate and relieve your stress response.

Eat Well

Sometimes the very best breakfast eats are the simplest.

While junk food, sugary drinks and other addictive’s may temporarily relieve stress, it has negative impacts on your health. Instead, stick to a healthy diet to control your moods and feel better about yourself in general.

Take Out Time For Your Hobby

The constant buzzing life of work and family can keep you busy the entire day. Nonetheless, it's important to make time for yourself and for the things you love doing. If reading or painting makes you feel happy – Do it! If it's watching a movie or listening to music that helps you keep calm- then do that instead! Make sure to give yourself some ‘Me-Time’ so that you can reduce stress and feel more elevated.

These are simple tips that one can follow on a day-to-day basis. However, if you feel prolonged levels of stress, you can always seek a counselor or therapist to talk to.
